How to Shop a Farmers Market: A Beginner's Guide
5 min read
A farmers market is one of the best places to buy food. The produce is usually picked within a day or two, the person selling it often grew it, and the money stays in your community. If you have never been, here is how to make the most of your first trip.
Bring the right things
- Cash and small bills. Many vendors now take cards or accept SNAP tokens, but small bills keep lines moving and help vendors who do not.
- Reusable bags or a basket. A sturdy tote or a small wagon makes a big haul easy to carry.
- A cooler for a hot day. Meat, eggs, cheese, and greens hold up much better if you can keep them cool on the way home.
Timing matters
Arrive early for the best selection. Popular items like berries, sweet corn, and flowers sell out fast. If you would rather save money and do not mind a smaller selection, the last hour of the market is when some vendors discount what is left rather than pack it up.
Shop the whole market first
Walk the full market once before you buy. Prices and quality vary from stall to stall, and you will spot what looks best that day. Then double back for your favorites.
Talk to the growers
The people behind the table usually know their food better than anyone. Ask what is best this week, how to store it, or how to cook something you have never tried. Most are happy to share, and it is the fastest way to eat well through the season.
Buy what is in season
